Screenwriting Tips From Larry

 (#2 in a series)

Screenwriting Books for your Reference Library

In my last article I briefly touched on how-to books. Now we'll take a look at some. You can find them on character, structure, marketing, and the dreaded subject of formatting. Plus there are books on specific genres. Books on theory. They go on and on. I have a great number of them that I've accumulated over the years. Some I always seem to migrate to when I'm writing or just wanting to brush up on some craft or theoretical point.

Here is a list of the ones I recommend in no particular order of preference:

Screenplay: The Foundations of Screenwriting by Syd Field

Writing the Romantic Comedy by Billy Mernit

The Secrets of Action Screenwriting by William C. Martell

The Writer's Journey by Christopher Vogler

Writing Your Screenplay by Cynthia Whitcomb

The Art of Dramatic Writing by Lajos Egri

Poetics by Aristotle

And finally, the one book I'd have if I could only have one:

Screenplay, Writing the Picture by Russin & Downs.

Books on theory can be timeless and therefore one can access them whenever the need arises. Not only are they great for information, but they can be a fantastic source of inspiration.

Books on formatting, however, are a different animal. NEVER EVER buy or use a book on formatting that is older than five years unless it has been revised. Changes occur over time that will date you if you don't include them in your screenplay(s). Even though I don't agree with David Trottier on all points, in my opinion the definitive book on formatting is his The Screenwriter's Bible.

The best advice I can give is to use these books as references. None of them should be followed verbatim.

And remember, screenwriting isn't something you do, it's something you wear like a cloak.

Cancer Incidence in Los Alamos County

By Amy Williams

A report released this month has found that cancer incidence in Los Alamos County (LAC) is increased upwards of 125% when compared to the New Mexico state reference population.  The report investigates 24 types of cancer and found that of those cancers, seven exhibited increased incidence in LAC for the years 1970-1996.  The report indicates increased incidence of ovarian cancer (45% increase), non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma (48%), prostate cancer (49%), female breast cancer (50%), testicular cancer (82%), thyroid cancer (106%) and melanoma (125%).  Furthermore, the report finds a 41% increase of breast cancer mortality in LAC.

New Mexico’s Right to Know:  The Impacts of Los Alamos National Laboratory Operations on Public Health and the Environment, was produced by Concerned Citizens for Nuclear Safety (CCNS) and four technical experts.  The report investigates historical and current plutonium releases from Los Alamos National Laboratory (LANL) into the air, cancer incidence and mortality in LAC, and occupational health studies conducted at LANL.

The report supports the continuation of the historical document review and dose reconstruction project of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).  CDC’s work is currently threatened due to budget cuts and heightened security at LANL.  LANL is the last major DOE site to receive a dose reconstruction, which estimates the amount of radiation and chemicals to which a person may have been exposed based on historical emissions data.

“After reviewing the data, we see a significantly higher incidence rate in seven cancers.  To investigate these cancer rates, it is important to geographically compare cancer cases with pollution sources,” says Catherine Richards, who investigated cancer incidence for New Mexico’s Right to Know.  “The dose reconstruction will assist us with identifying contaminant types and concentrations that have been released into the LAC environment.”

All of the seven cancers that exhibit increased incidence are cancers for which claims may be filed under the Energy Employees Occupational Illness Compensation Program Act.  The Act provides for $150,000 lump sum payments to current or former Department of Energy (DOE) employees who can prove that their illnesses were caused by their work.  Employees at other DOE sites have used dose reconstructions to support their claims under the Act.

“The CDC’s work would give LANL employees a more definitive picture of their exposures, thereby giving them a stronger foundation on which to base their claims under the Compensation Act,” said Joni Arends, Executive Director of CCNS.  “Furthermore, the CDC’s work would provide the communities downwind and downstream of LANL a more accurate idea of the risk of living near this facility.  New Mexico citizens have the right to know the levels of radioactive and hazardous contaminants that they have been exposed to as a result of LANL operations.”

New Mexico’s Right to Know and a sign-on letter to Senators Pete Domenici and Jeff Bingaman requesting that they support the work of the CDC are available at www.nuclearactive.org or by calling (505) 986-1973.
